Mattoni and Czech Grand Design

Press Release of Karlovarské minerální vody, a.s.
On the Occasion of 2007 Czech Grand Design

Karlovarské minerální vody, a.s. strives to work with design on a long-term and conceptual basis. This is illustrated by the co-operation with Alessi, the Pininfarina studio or with designers Rony Plesl, Bořek Šípek, and Ivan Jelínek. "We are proud that through our co-operation with Czech designers we can participate in creating a mosaic of contemporary Czech design, namely by projects, such as the new Mattoni bottle design, for which Jan Čapek has been nominated for the Designer of the Year award," says Dr. Gabrielle Guzzo, KMV Strategic Marketing Director.
We perceive design as a significant element of modern life and that is why we have been supporting Designblok for many years, as well as Czech Grand Design, awarded by the Academy of Design of the Czech Republic, which we have been supporting as its general partner since its first year. To its holder, the Mattoni Grand Designer of the Year, i.e. the highest award for the designer receiving the highest number of votes in all categories, means winning a contract funded by Carlsbad Mineral Water for creating prizes for the successive year of Czech Grand Design. Thus, last year's winner, Professor Jiří Pelcl, created the prize for this year's Czech Grand Design, which is being presented today and which is indeed untraditional in shape and selected material. "A prize awarded for design should symbolize ingenious thinking, the conciseness of shape in relation to function, material innovation, and the ability to carry a direct message. These are the essential attributes of the work of a designer," summarizes the author of the 2007 Czech Grand Design prizes, Professor Jiří Pelcl.
We are pleased that Czech Grand Design has been fulfilling its purpose also by bringing together authors and clients and by giving birth to new projects.  A concrete example is the new Mattoni glasses developed in co-operation with the Olgoj Chorchoj Design Studio, Moravské sklárny Květná (Květná Moravian Glassworks) and Carlsbad Mineral Water as the parties who had first met during the first year of Czech Grand Design. To blow a completely new glass tumbler for Mattoni as proof of the cooperation that began with the first year of the Czech Grand Design was a great honour for us. We will be more than delighted if the public likes it," says JUDr. Filip Šedivý, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Květná Moravian Glassworks. "It is a sturdy glass created for everyday use in restaurant facilities of all types. Its form was inspired by the ideal human figure, the slim waist-line of Twiggy, and the crystalline form of today’s architecture and design... Its hour-glass shape in the area of gripping is very ergonomic and logical. The massive bottom in contrast with the slim body of the glass leaves a solid impression and prevents the glass from being knocked over easily. The expanded top part of the tumbler enables its insertion on a shaker during the preparation of cocktails," adds Michal Froněk from the Olgoj Chorchoj Design Studio.
We have created a special limited series to introduce the new glasses on the occasion of Czech Grand Design. And we would like to dedicate it to the members of the Academy of Design of the Czech Republic as a token of our gratitude. Finally, we would like to emphasize the contribution of the Czech Grand Design awards, which we mainly see in their casting new light on the work of the designers, opening new possibilities for them. The new Mattoni glasses are evidence of that.
