Canoe Mattoni: the World Cup and a Big Carnival Kanoe

Within the period from 13th to 15th June Canoe Mattoni, the festival of water sports was held for eleventh time in Karlovy Vary. It was the first and the second competition of this year’s World Cup series. The competitors competed in the sprint and classical descent in wild water, in which a complete world top was introduced to the audience. The competition was attended by 150 canoeists and kayakers from 17 countries worldwide. Besides European watermen’s powers, such as Italy, France or Germany, even representatives from the overseas countries, such as the USA, Australia or New Zealand, stood at the start.

The competition was very attractive for both the audience and crews themselves, racing on Teplá river right in the spa centre of Karlovy Vary. The organizers prepared the race course with the flow of 20 m³ per second, where the river was regulated with ten gates and thirty concrete obstacles.

The winners of the Saturday’s six-hundred-meter sprint became Jernej Korenjak from Slovenia in the men’s K1 individual kayak category and Normen Weber from Germany in C1 individual canoe category. The women’s K1individual kayak category was won by Jessica Oughton from Great Britain. Thomas Peltriaux and Theodore Heitz from France won in the category of C2 double canoe.

In the Sunday’s competition in the classical descent in wild water Maximilian Benassi from Italy was successful in the men´s K1 kayak category, Emil Milihram from Croatia won in C1 canoe category. In the women´s K1 kayak category Sabine Eichenberger from Switzerland was the fastest. Ulrich Andre and Patrik Driesch won C2 double canoe category.

The organizers also prepared traditional Canoe Mattoni Open, the competition, in which both registered and unregistered watermen had a chance to compare their forces with the world top. The most successful were Kamil Mrůzek in K1 kayak category, Ondřej Rolenc in C1 canoe category, Radka Valíková in K1 kayak category, Roman Mornštejn and Petr Veselý in C2 double canoe category and the crew of Jan Šťastný, Jan Havlíček, Lukáš Uncajtík, Aleš Daněk in R4 raft category.

The programme also included musical Canoe Mattoni Fest, in which Lucie Bílá, Petr Muk, Meky Žbirka, Anna K, Petr Kolář or the bands Kryštof and Chinaski starred. The whole programme was topped by a competition of untraditional watercrafts Mattoni Water Carnival. After crews´ happy passage through the river course their watercrafts´ originality was assessed. The jury as well as the audience were impressed most of all by “Smoky (“Čmoudík”)“, the creators of which bore off, besides applause, the prize of CZK 200 thousand. Karlovy Vary Carnival with a parade of masks and allegorical vehicles through the city was held on Sunday.
