Company history

"In the cradle of the mountains, lies a lovely valley admired by numerous visitors from abroad. They marvel at its tranquillity, its woods, and its life-giving spring. The spring heals the ailing and its bubbles sparkle beautifully in the glass." (Theodor Waldbach, 1890)

Kyselka and Its Heyday
The picturesque small town of Kyselka, situated in a woody valley in the Doupov Mountains near Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad), has been associated with balneology and curative springs since time immemorial. Nevertheless, its star was born only in the Romantic Era (early 19th century), which brought about the fashion of discovering and adoring natural sceneries and later also the phenomenon of spa tourism. Kyselka thus became an idyllic destination of pleasure trips for the spa visitors of Carlsbad, who admired not only the local landscape but also its delicate mineral springs.

Heinrich Mattoni Leases the Otto Spring
In 1867, the local Otto Spring was leased by a mineral water exporter from Carlsbad, Heinrich Mattoni (1830 – 1910).  With unprecedented energy, Mattoni ventured into building a modern mineral water filling and shipping plant in Kyselka. And in 1868, he began filling mineral water into glass bottles (until then mineral water had been filled mainly into crockery and earthenware jugs) and introduced bottling machines. He also started labelling bottles with printed paper labels depicting a red eagle – the symbol of the Mattoni family emblem. Heinrich Mattoni was an able businessman and he mastered the art of advertising. Nothing therefore hampered the export of Mattoni's mineral water all over the world.

Export of Mattoni Mineral Water
Although mineral water from Kyselka had been exported since the late 18th century, a considerable increase in export volumes was the result of the business policy implemented by Mattoni's firm after 1867. It is said that 331,449 bottles were exported in 1869.
Compared to Karlovy Vary, Kyselka has a rather interesting distinct feature as far as the export of mineral water is concerned. Carlsbad began exporting its mineral water long after its foundation, when it had gradually become a famous spa (i.e. in 1844), while with Kyselka, it was the other way round. The water from Kyselka had been distributed long before the development of the municipality and its infrastructure.

Mattoni Buys Kyselka
Mattoni´s mineral water (Kysibelka) became one of the best-known mineral waters in the world and its success inspired Mattoni to buy the whole village of Kyselka (1873) from Count Czernin and to build a local spa as well as infrastructure.
The construction of spa houses, hotels, promenades, a colonnade, and a hydropathic house followed. Mattoni also invested into new mineral spring captation and the local railway. In 1894, he constructed a railroad track between Vojkovice nad Ohří and Kyselka. The quick and inexpensive transport by railway resulted in the further growth of exports and profits.
When Heinrich Mattoni died in 1910, about 10 million bottles of Mattoni mineral water were being exported worldwide and the spa was flourishing. Unfortunately, World War I and II brought on a decline of balneology.

Kyselka, a Part of Carlsbad Mineral Water
Until 1945, the Kysibelka mineral water distribution firm had been in the possession of the joint-stock company Heinrich Mattoni AG. Following the end of World War II, the company was nationalized and operated as a plant of a Karlovy Vary based firm Západočeská zřídla (West Bohemian Hot Springs). After 1989, this firm was transformed into the joint-stock company Karlovarské minerálni vody (Carlsbad Mineral Water) and today, the modern filling plant in Kyselka, built in the late 1980s and modernized in the 1990s, is one of its divisions.
Carlsbad Mineral Water has complemented the successful Mattoni mineral water with Aquila spring water, which is also filled at the Kyselka plant, and Magnesia – natural mineral water rich in magnesium, which is filled in the West Bohemian town of Mnichov.
